Cliché? Maybe, but I think it´s been the most WTF moment in many people´s lives. :P

It was less a cliché than something that created the cliché. It was definitely a WTF moment for me, although at that moment I was young and innocent and had no idea what it stood for. :D

Many people, if I recall correctly, believed that Vader was lying to distract Luke, and that this would be discovered in the next installment. In my case, I did not have to wait years to see RoTJ, so I can´t put myself in the place of all those ppl who were suddenly thrown in an universe of crackpot theories... except it was probably like the pre-Deathly Hallows craze. :)
