‘I am told that you have a daughter.’
His reverie disturbed, Elrond turns to the voice. Under the trees there is shadow, but the figure standing behind him is very tall, and around his head there is a hint of starlight on silver hair. ‘Yes, I do,’ he replies, gratefully accepting the present tense.
The visitor comes to sit beside him. ‘She did not sail with you?’
‘No.’ And one word is enough to convey all.
A sigh, then silence. ‘I heard tales of her from others that returned. They said that she walked in Lúthien’s likeness, and I wished that she would come so that I might see for myself, though it would cause me great pain… perhaps it is better this way.’
‘Perhaps,’ Elrond says quietly. ‘She chose Lúthien’s fate for Lúthien’s reasons. I can only hope that her love will be enough to sustain her.’
For a while they sit in silence, until Thingol murmurs, ‘I think she would have liked it here.’
‘They would have liked it here,’ Elrond affirms. And they sit together in silence for a long time, silver-crowned king and dark-haired lord, while the stars wheel overhead and the wind in the leaves is like a daughter’s laughter from long ago.
