Meme that I should be able to answer over the weekend:

The green lady herself is Gaila, who's from the Star Trek movie. The icon is a manip of (I think) a couple of other films her actress has been in; the one I'm using now is a bit closer to the film. Gaila's a minor character in Star Trek, we see her in two scenes (and in the background of a third). I'm trying not to put spoilers in here because I'm not sure if you've seen the film or are interested in it, and I can't find the clip I wanted on youtube.

This is what the movie shows us about Gaila:

- she is Uhura's roommate
- she is an Orion, an alien species in Star Trek
- she is one of Kirk's many conquests, but Kirk is also one of her many conquests (she mentions that she promised Uhura that she'd stop bringing guys back to their room)
- her whereabouts at the end of the movie are unknown

...and that's basically what we get to build on her character. What I love is that STXI fandom has taken that information and run with it all over the place. I love fill-the-gaps fic and because we know so little about Gaila there are so many ways to write about her. Plus she's a female character who is seen to enjoy sex and is not judged for it, sadly a rarety. In the movie she comes off as a sort of alien Valley Girl, unfortunately, but the fandom (especially where_no_woman) has filled in her background.

And I don't know, somehow she just talks to me? I have so many ideas about fics for her and for whatever reason I can get into Gaila's head better than any other character's. People write about her looking at humans from an alien perspective, being a survivor of the Orion syndicate, being someone who came from a disadvantaged background and worked her way into Starfleet, but who knows? She could have grown up on Earth and never set foot in space before the events of the movie. She's a mystery, and I get the feeling that we'll never quite figure her out.
