It's a day late, but oh well...

People of LJ! Are you sick and tired of Valentines*? Do you retch at the colour pink? Are you going to go on a homicidal rampage if you hear one more person say 'I wuv oo'?

Fear not, for help is at hand. I present: Tequilamas!

Happy drinking!

*If Valentine's Day was celebrated properly, with re-enactments of beheadings, Romans, and religious persecution, then I might like it. I wrote to Hallmark, but they didn't seem to like my ideas for cards - neither the 'you've made me lose my head' one or the 'since I met you, my heart will go Roman no more' one. Philistines.

The joys of being twelve(ish) hours behind is that I can still celebrate on the day of, even. XD

(Well, I really shouldn't complain about Valentine's Day. I spent a good part of it on my back. In the dentist's office, with four shots of novacaine, but details, details...)

I missed it this year. I have to remind myself not to forget May the Fourth, and Pi Day, and B2MEM, and the 25th of May, and Talk Like A Pirate Day...

I didn“t even realise it was Valentine“s Day (heard something about it from hormonal teenagers when I went to teach a class in high school, but then promptly forgot it again). The Roman persecution idea seems a good idea, though. I could even teach a class on that! ;)

I didn't hear about it either until people starting posting things on the messageboards and such. I would definitely volunteer to do a Valentines demonstration the Roman way!

Valentine's Day is a Hallmark holiday created to make people with partners buy stuff and people without partners feel bad. And before I had a partner I was like, 'This holiday is rubbish! It's crap! It's pointless! It's wrong! It's all wrong!'

But now I see that it's become a day, regardless of its very different origins, to actually take the time and say, 'Hey, I kind of like your company' to the person you're with. Because often with work and study and god knows what else, you kind of forget to do things like that. So it's nice in that respect, to take the time and tell someone why you like them and don't want to scream, 'Get out of my house!' every time they turn up or, 'Stop harrassing me!' when they call you incessantly.

I have no problems with a 'hey, I (still) like you and all' day, but I don't like the way it's become commercial. I think we'd have more fun if there wasn't really a set day, and people could give each other surprise valentines. That would be sweet.

It would be sweet, but I know I'd forget. I'm terrible at remembering things like that (I forgot the set day and only remembered when I went into the city and saw hearts everywhere). Besides, I try and do sweet things during the year when I remember that I have to actually show affection for The Boy *g*

But yes, the commercialism makes it crap. Just a money-making venture. Now that's romantic.
