A non-prompt Turin fic

Gah, I can't find a prompt at the lyrics table to put this on, so it'll have to be a stand-alone. At this rate, I could have claimed Morwen/Hurin almost as easily.

 Familiar

It was her eyes that were unnerving, Húrin decided. She was beautiful, certainly, with her graceful movements and sleek dark hair, but her silence and those piercing eyes projected an aura of aloofness. Her stare, when she turned it on those she disliked, became a weapon that made the servants stop in their chatter and would-be hangers-on stutter and fumble at their practised niceties. Such a look might subjugate nations and drive men mad. It was certainly making him uncomfortable, but he was determined not to show it. She was not the only one with pride here.

Just as he thought he would have to look away, the cat in Morwen’s lap shifted, and the spell was broken. He looked up and saw his wife watching him – another woman with a powerful stare – with some amusement. ‘Have you never seen a cat before?’

‘Not one such as yours.’ The Hadoreans kept cats, yes, but they were a motley crowd, vocal in their loving and their fighting, and placid sacks of fur in their old age. This silent, elegant creature was something new in Dor-lómin – as was his wife, he supposed. ‘Does she have a name?’

‘If she has, she has not deigned to tell me.’ Morwen stroked the sable fur, and the cat closed its eyes in contentment. ‘She is not much of a conversationalist, but she keeps me company when I am alone in the house.’

‘You will not be alone for much longer,’ Húrin reminded her gently.

For the first time that he could remember, Morwen looked positively girlish as she smiled shyly. ‘No, not for much longer.’

‘Speaking of that, though…’ he hesitated. ‘Will our child be safe with her? I have heard that cats can steal a baby’s breath…’

Morwen’s eyes flashed. ‘And do you believe such tales?’

‘No. But I do not want to take that risk.’

‘Understandable,’ she relented. ‘She will not enter the nursery, on my word.’ Morwen’s gaze met her cat’s and he wondered how much understanding lay behind those feline eyes. The cat turned to look at him, held his gaze for a few moments as if in recognition, and began a steady, deep-throated purr.

Zokutou is acting strangely, so my Fic 5000 word count has no pretty pictures or anything: 4224/5000 = 84%
