Thoughts on Doctor Who.

Firstly, I hope my posts about timeslots for Doctor Who and such didn't confuse anyone, but I blame the TV guide for misleading us. And ABC for not showing it a week earlier, although this way we got two episodes in a week. That was nice.

The Runaway Bride

Well, I was aware that Donna didn't go with the Doctor, but I really feel for the unspoilered Brits who, when first watching the Christmas special, realised in horror that this might be the new companion. She's not a bad character, really, but she's annoying, and you have to question how serious we could take her when she's played by a comedian. Also, she's too like Rose, and she suffers in comparison. Donna's more like Jackie than Rose, really, but one chavvy companion is enough for a series. As for the actual plot, the red spider queen woman gave me unpleasant Shelob flashbacks, and I seriously question how someone could drill a hole right into the centre of the earth (the sudden drop in pressure would sent magma surging up the tunnel, for a start...), but it's cracky enough for Doctor Who. I didn't know the TARDIS could move forward in time quickly enough to see the creation of Earth, but there you go. But I don't think there are any theories for Earth being created before the sun. Ack. Geoscience is trying to ruin my viewing pleasure, curse it.

But all in all, the episode seemed rather lacklustre, and I guess that's because the Doctor was rather withdrawn. It shows that the whole series works on him being energetic, whether it's angry and energetic or happy and energetic. I know this happened straight after Doomsday, but still... and BBC, I and other audience members miss Rose, but we do remember what happened last season. I liked the references to his last 'friend', but we didn't need to hear her name, and not in the next episode either. The general message was OMG DON'T FORGET ROSE IS GONE *EMONESS*, with about as much subtlety as a brick to the head. On a more positive note, I loved the electric platform bicycle things. And wet Doctor is always appreciated.

Smith and Jones

Now this was more like it. Martha is cute and sassy and I love the way she refuses to call him 'Doctor'. I was apprehensive about Martha and how she'd compare to Rose, but you don't really need to compare them. They're both awesome anyway. It's like working a shift for two years with one person, and then they leave and you're working the same shift, but it's with someone else. That doesn't have to be a bad thing. So, I have a good feeling about Martha. The Zovirax reference was lovely and snarky. The Rhino Space Police have wonderful boots, but their methods are somewhat suspect - honestly, all somebody needs is a texta, and it all goes downhill. On a side note, I think Doctor Who and Torchwood are trying to make me lose all faith in hospitals. At least this one had a shop. :D I noticed that the Doctor's changed the colour of his shoes, and I guess he'll have to find another pair now. I thought he'd only be wearing the blue suit from now on, but I'm glad the pinstripe suit still gets a look in. I'm not sure where he got the new sonic screwdriver, but it's all good.

[Minor squee moment - when the Doctor mentioned working in the post office, I immediately thought of Going Postal. If they ever make a movie of it, I'd love to see David Tennant as Moist von Lipwig. Maybe he would too. :D)

So yes - I am teh excited, especially since I remember to tape this season. Can't think why I didn't tape season 1 and 2, because the DVDs are damn expensive. Oh well. There is Shakespearian London to look forward to in the next ep, and I hope someone mentions Macbeth.
