(And actually, I agree with Fëanor: fighting Morgoth on single combat was a very stupid thing to do, not to mention suicidal. I´ve always wondered about that. Maybe he was thinking heroically, like Taira no Tomomori in "Heike Monogatari" ("In China, India, and our own country of Japan, even a peerless commander or warrior is helpless if his luck has run out. But honour is precious! Don´t show weakness in front of the Easterners! What is there to save your lives for?"). But Tolkien´s creed would not have looked favourably upon suicide, even a heroical one.
